Figure 1 โ The full cross-section check of a UB 457x152x82 in S355 under 900 kN compression, 100kN shear and 200 kNm bending โ classification, effective-area compression check, plastic bending check and the reduced moment resistance for the combined case.
๐ Introduction
To know whether a certain steel section are sufficient structually under certain design action, steel cross-section checking need to be carried out.
In this work example we run the full cross-section check of a hot-rolled I-section (457x152x82) in S355 carrying a compression force NEd = 900 kN, shear force VEd = 100 kN together with a major-axis bending moment MEd = 200 kNm, in the same order a calculation report runs it:
Classify the section โ the class decides which property each resistance is built from
Compression check Nc,Rd โ the web is Class 4 in compression, so the effective area enters
Shear check Vc,Rd
Bending check Mc,y,Rdโ the web is Class 1 in bending, so the full plastic modulus applies
Combined axial + shear + bending check โ NEd is too large to ignore, so the reduced moment resistance MN,y,Rd is required
Below is the design information of the I-section (457x152x82), which we will check under compression, shear and major-axis bending.
